Fremantle go it alone in Australia Day snub
With the annual Australia Day celebrations only days away, one Western Australian council remains resolute in its disregard for the day often coined ‘Invasion Day’.
In an effort to close the gap between indigenous Australians and white Australians, the port city of Fremantle has announced that it will not be taking part in celebrations on January 26.
The city will instead host celebrations two days later in keeping with the #changethedate slogan.
‘What we’re doing is coming up with something that is actually more Australian,’ Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt told 7:30.
Far right groups are planning protests against what they believe is ‘An act of betrayal against Australia.’
