Pressure on May builds as anti-Trump petition hits 1m signatures
UK citizens are calling for Donald Trump’s state visit to be cancelled in light of the US president’s immigration policy.
A petition to stop Trump from meeting with the Queen has passed a million signatures as Britons continue to pressurise Theresa May for her reluctance to criticise Trump’s anti-islamic agenda.
The petition is reactionary to Trump’s most recent immigration ban which prohibits travellers from predominantly muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen – from entering the United States.
At this stage, it is unclear whether the petition will make a significant impact.
Following days of near silence on the matter, Theresa May has stated that she does not agree with the ban and has instructed her ministers to contact senior members of Trump’s team.
