NRL round 1 match report: Cronulla Sharks v Brisbane Broncos

Brisbane have kicked off their 2017 NRL campaign by defeating the reigning premiers, Cronulla, 26-18 on Thursday night.

The Broncos took an early lead courtesy of a slick final ball from Darius Boyd to Jordan Kahu.

The premiers hit back soon after through Gerard Beale and James Maloney added the extras to level the scores at six points apiece.

A plethora of simple errors cost the Sharks, and Brisbane were able to capitalise on their opponents indiscretions and extend their lead out to 20-6 following a Kahu penalty goal and tries to James Roberts and Corey Oats.

The Sharks refused to lie down and showed the kind of resolve that steered them towards their club’s maiden NRL title last season, with James Maloney and Rick Leutele both crossing the white stripe.

In the end, it was Anthony Milford who put the game to bed, scoring after an impressive piece of footwork and ensuring that the Broncos registered their first win for season 2017.
