The 2018 Australian of the Year will be announced this evening in Canberra.
As is custom each state and territory has nominated one outstanding person for their contribution in a specialised field.
Here are the 2018 nominees.
New South Wales: Michelle Yvonne Simmons

Victoria: Samuel Johnson
Samuel Johnson has put his acting career on hold to advocate and raise funds for cancer research.
Queensland: Johnathan Thurston
One of the all-time rugby league greats has used his fame and wealth to assist struggling indigenous Australians.
South Australia: David David
Professor David David AC is a specialist in the area of Craniomaxillofacial Surgery including cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the Head and Neck.
Tasmania: Scott Rankin
Scott Rankin is a playwright and theatre director who focuses much of his time and energy on contributing to social justice through the arts.
Western Australia: Tracy Westerman
Tracy Westerman is a clinical psychologist and doctor of philosophy who has dedicated much of her life to researching mental illness in Australia.
Northern Territory: Bo Remenyi
Bo Remenyi is a cardiologist focused on curing rheumatic heart disease in the Northern Territory.
Australian Capital Territory: Dion Devow
Dion Devow is an entrepreneur whose line of clothing resonates with Australia’s indigenous community.
