New Holmes for Munster and Val
As the Cowboys prepare for life after Jonathan Thurston, they will find themselves with plenty of money to spare in their salary cap. The cash will surely be used to purchase a strong representative ball player that can slide into their spine.
There has been plenty of speculation that the Cows are hunting down Valentine Holmes. It has been made clear that Holmes is looking for a permanent fullback spot as he continues to spend time on the wing at Cronulla.
The Sharks boast two other quality fullbacks in Josh Dugan and Matt Moylan – both big name recruits with representative experience. After starting round one at Fullback, Holmes has since been shifted to the wing but will love an opportunity to head back to the spine, despite his terrific strike record as an edge specialist.
There has also been speculation that the Cowboys could go for Storm five-eighth Cameron Munster whose versatility would be a big draw. Munster played in Melbourne’s 2016 grand final side at fullback in Billy Slater’s absence.
The Storm offered Munster a long term contract but pulled the deal due to off field drama during the World Cup in November last year.
Munster could be the perfect man to lead the Storm post-big three era. However, Munster is reluctant to make any decisions until coach Craig Bellamy confirms his future. The Cowboys have not denied being in contact with Munster despite it being public knowledge that they are interested in Holmes.
The club is not to table a formal offer until November 1, as he is contracted until 2019. Munster has also been linked to the Wests Tigers.
