Champions League Final Preview: Liverpool Dare to Dream
Another instalment of the most anticipated clash in club football awaits us, but this one has a very different feel to it.
Liverpool finished 4th in England and Real Madrid 3rd in Spain, neither threatening their respective domestic titles. These two clubs are not the best two in Europe. In the words of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “we are not world class” – but damn, they’re good to watch.
Predicted Liverpool Team:
Liverpool (4-3-3): GK: Loris Karius RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold CB: Virgil Van Dijk CB: Dejan Lovren LB: Andy Robertson CM: Georginio Wijnaldum CM: James Milner CM: Jordan Henderson RW: Mohamed Salah CF: Roberto Firmino LW: Sadio Mane.
The trio of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and that little magician, Mohamed Salah, have had all football fans on the edge of their seats all season. They play like an Under 8s team; with complete freedom and an inclination to outscore the opposition.
But Real Madrid are the seasoned professionals.
They are chasing three Champions League trophies in a row and, ultimately, immortality. When a commentator asked Ronaldo if he could be compared to Salah, his response summed up the attitude in Madrid: “No one is like me”.
Predicted Real Madrid Team:
Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): GK: Keylor Navas, RB: Dani Carvajal CB: Sergio Ramos CB: Raphael Varane LB: Marcelo CDM: Casemiro CDM: Toni Kroos CM: Luka Modric RM: Gareth Bale ST: Karim Benzema LM: Cristiano Ronaldo.
This game is about so much more than football. This is about the underdog. If Liverpool pull this off, football fans around the world will have hope that their team can do the same.
On the other hand, Real Madrid fans are already planning their celebrations in Kiev.
My head says that the Spanish juggernaut cannot be stopped, so for the sake of neutrality, I’m going to have to tip them.
Ah, bugger it…
