Queensland and Australia fullback Billy Slater has announced that this year’s State of Origin series will be his last.

Slater announced his retirement at a press conference this morning where he was joined by Kevin Walters and Greg Inglis.

“My family – obviously a lot of support and unconditional support has been there with my family, my wife Nicole and my two kids,” Slater said.

“My dad instilled that rugby league passion in me when I was a boy.

“I would like to thank the Queensland public, the Innisfail people, they’ve always made me feel pretty special playing in the Maroons jersey.

“I think about the traits we have here in the Maroons team – be humble, never give up and look after your mates when they’re doing it tough. They’re just traits of Queenslanders.”

Walters applauded Slater for changing the way that fullbacks play the game and for being a role model for young fans of rugby league.

Slater is widely regarded as the greatest fullback of all time.
